Should My Child See a Chiropractor?

child getting adjustmentHey Parents – we see you, always going the extra mile for your kids from school to soccer practice, from dentist to haircut; you want what’s best for them and it shows. But what do you do when you have concerns about your kids’ health that you’re not sure how to solve? Babies are considered healthy if they spit up consistently, favor looking to one side, don’t poop for days, have a terrible latch and don’t sleep well. There must surely be a better way.

That’s where chiropractic care comes in. You might be thinking, my child doesn’t have back or neck pain, why do they need a chiropractor? The truth is we see kids in our office daily. All of those common food and sleep issues for babies and even children can be discussed with your chiropractor who has training working with kids. And just think, when they’re getting better sleep, you are too.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe For Kids?

Absolutely. Reports of children having complications are few and far between. It’s important to take your child to a chiropractor with an emphasis in children, like Utopia Family Chiropractic. How we adjust kids is drastically different than how we adjust adults. There is usually no popping with a child adjustment. In fact, we even use the same low force, gentle technique on many of our adult patients. We have a lot of babies who will sleep during the adjustments. The major complaint we usually get in our office from kids is that we take too long during their adjustment and they want to get back to playing. When you think about a kids’ adjustment, compare it to the amount of pressure used to check if a tomato or peach is ripe.

Our goal is to make everyone feel comfortable in our office. It has worked so well, that we often have siblings fighting over who gets to go first. Kids love being in our office and love getting adjusted.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Children

We can see so many changes for our patients who see a chiropractor regularly. Since parents seek chiropractic for their kids different reasons than adults, the benefits are different too. With our kiddos at Utopia Family Chiropractic, we see we have seen less sick days, healthy and regular bowel movements, better sleep, and happier moods. As you can imagine, when kids sleep better, they are in a better mood – which means mom and dad are too.

When Should You Bring Your Child to the Chiropractor?

The same way you take your child to the doctor when they are sick, it’s time to make a chiropractic appointment if they complain about pain. The number one thing to look for is, if they show signs of discomfort like limping or holding or arching their back. Pain is never normal and certainly not normal for a child. Any change in bowel movements at any age, whether they’re going too much or not enough, it is time to visit the chiropractor. If you cannot seem to kick the sick and despite all your efforts your kids keep coming home with the same cough and runny nose, it is time for an immune boosting child chiropractic adjustment.

A chiropractor visit can even benefit the smallest in your crew. If you notice your baby or toddler always favoring one side and struggling to look both ways, there is an imbalance in the nervous system. We’ve seen it before, and we can help.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Chiropractic Appointment

We know your top priority as a parent is the health of your child and at Utopia Family Chiropractic, we can help shoulder some of that burden. Schedule an appointment today and see for yourself the benefits that chiropractic care can have for your kids.

At your first appointment, once the paperwork is out of the way, we’ll talk through your child’s history and any concerns you may be having. We then talk about how we are different and our focus on the nervous system and how it is playing a role with their health. Dr. Lindsey then performs nervous system scans to see what is going on to get a full picture. At your second visit Dr. Lindsey will explain the nervous system scans and her suggested care plan and when everyone is ready, move ahead with the adjustment.

Our adjustments are gentle and we take the time to talk you through the process and answer all of your questions. Similar to an adult adjustment, your child may experience some soreness in the days following their appointment. This is completely normal. Once we start adjusting the nervous system is healing and beginning to function, and as it heals you’ll begin to see the changes. Remember, small adjustments lead to big changes over time.
